PROJECT TYPE: Bridge | Civil
STATE: Australian Capital Territory
LOCATION: Molonglo River, Weston Creek
PROJECT VALUE: $7.6M

Designed and constructed by CBW, the Butters Bridge  (a.k.a. Molonglo Link 2) is an incremental launched box girder pedestrian bridge constructed over the Molonglo River, Weston Creek. At 242m in length the bridge is one of the tallest and longest in the ACT.

Innovative construction techniques reduced construction time by 2 months. It has a 62m main span and piers to 26m high. Segments of 36m were launched with completed balustrade and aluminum screens installed.

The bridge is required to carry a new trunk gravity sewer across the river to link into the existing Tuggeranong main carrier sewer and then to the Lower Molonglo Sewage Treatment Works. The bridge is also to be used for pedestrian and cycleway access plus have the capacity to carry Icon Water maintenance vehicles to 11 tonnes gross mass.

The redesign of the balustrade also resulted in significant savings for the government.

The project won the Master Builders award for 2016 in the category of National Civil/Infrastructure – under $25 million. The project also won one of the most prestigious awards in civil infrastructure the Master Builders ACT - CCF Earth Award for projects between $10m and 30m.
